In the wake of the shocking news that beloved bartender Phil Wells was murdered at The Garage on the morning of November 14th, 2011, I’m Positive, Inc. (IPI) organized an emergency fundraiser to help Phil’s loved ones provide for funeral arrangements and memorial services.
On November 15, our Executive Board President opened a checking account at Wells Fargo Bank named “Phil Wells Benefit Memorial Fund”. In addition, supporters were able to donate on the IPI website through their existing Corporate PayPal merchant account.
Since the account opened (through December 31), there have been 9 In-branch donations, 4 In-person donations and 30 donations made through PayPal totaling $14,865.08. These donations came from 10 businesses and 33 individuals from 6 different States and 3 different countries. Some businesses held large fundraisers to generate the much-needed financial assistance for Phil’s family.
In addition to the funeral and memorial expenses, the family faced the burden of removing Phil’s personal property from his home and discerning what to do with it. Five IPI volunteers helped pack Phil’s personal effects, furniture, appliances, clothing and a massive Dolly Parton collection. All items removed were stored in a temporary storage unit. All furniture items were donated to a nonprofit organization named CBC; to be used in care centers for Alzheimer’s patients. All articles of clothing were sorted and will be either sold at Buffalo Exchange in Las Vegas or donated to St. Therese Center benefiting people with HIV.
In 2011, IPI paid $11,691.18 out of a total of $18,349.50 in funeral expenses alone. To help with the cost, Phil’s family applied to the Nevada Victims of Crime (NV VOC) for financial assistance. This organization helps victims (and families of deceased victims) to pay for expenses related to the crime to which they are a victim. The family reports that the NV VOC will pay $5,000.00. Including this assumed payment, this leaves the family with a remaining balance of $1,658.32.
Any future donations received to this account will be used to help the family pay for the related outstanding expenses. At the family’s request, in the event that there is a surplus of donations in the account after all expenses are paid, these funds will be donated to two charities equally; one animal charity and one LGBT charity. IPI has declined the family’s generous offer to be one of the charities to receive payment from any surplus in donations as we feel it would be a conflict of interest.
Phil was laid to rest at Groman Eden Cemetery in Mission Hills, CA on November 20th, 2011. The unveiling of the customized memorial bench, living tree and plaque will take place on Phil’s day of birth, March 16th, 2012. Following the Memorial Party at the park, attendees are going to celebrate Phil’s birthday at Escape Lounge. There will be a special Dolly Parton themed show at Escape Lounge with everyone that attends being encouraged to dress up (a little or a lot) like Dolly Parton to show support of Phil’s favorite singer.
Our sincere and humble appreciation is extended to everyone that donated his or her time and money for this cause. We are proud to serve a community that demonstrates such incredible support in such dark times.
